Welcome to NJRR Live!
Brian joins NJRR’s own Heather Warburton and author Laurie Endicott for this special episode! No More Measles, Laurie’s book about vaccination, can be purchased through NJRR as a fundraiser. Laurie is currently working on other projects, such as writing another book and preparing to present at a virtual conference.
Vaccination is the only way to prevent a virus such as the coronavirus which spreads through air. Early vaccine studies have been promising, but there is no guarantee for when the vaccine is going to be publicly available. Most people don’t just have an emergency year’s supply of money so that they can stay home, especially not working class people. This means that folks of lower socioeconomic status are practically forced to go back out into the world and expose themselves to the virus in order to provide for their families.
MMR Vaccine May Alleviate COVID-19 Symptoms?
Due to the coronavirus, people are falling behind in getting their kids routine shots, which could be a problem because it could pose a risk for future outbreaks. It’s very important to keep up to date on vaccinations, for both personal and public safety.
Researchers at Cambridge University have found that SARS-CoV2, which causes the COVID-19 disease, is very similar in protein structure to the rubella virus, suggesting that vaccines for the rubella virus may be effective in managing symptoms of the coronavirus. The MMR (Measles, Mumps, and Rubella) vaccine may not be enough to prevent you from getting infected, but it could help boost your immune system so that the effects of the virus, if contracted, are lessened.
The Truth Behind Herd Immunity
One of the things that concerns Laurie greatly is that people have been throwing around the term “herd immunity” in terms of ways to deal with the coronavirus. Herd immunity is not a strategy, it’s an endpoint. Herd immunity can either be achieved through a vaccine or though allowing everyone to be exposed to the virus, entailing massive numbers of deaths. In a disgusting display of capitalistic attitude, some people are loudly proclaiming that they are willing to opt for the latter if it means that the economy can open up sooner.
Crystal Mor on Incarceration
Brian and Heather are also joined by Crystal Mor, an organizer from Pennsylvania with a passion for social issues, to talk about problems related to incarceration. For example, the United States has 5% of the world’s population but 25% of the world’s prison population. People are released from prison alone and with no resources or direction, leading to death and re-arrest. Through our broken justice system, people are constantly being brought into correctional facilities. This has resulted in the spread of coronavirus through facilities, and it will continue if nothing changes.
At the time of this podcast’s recording, there have been 45 deaths. Inaction in responding to this crisis is a death sentence for people who were never sentenced to death. On Thursday, May 28, 2020, people are invited to meet up, socially distanced and masked up in their cars, at the Trenton Memorial for what was once a Caravan rally. Now, this event has become something bigger and also more somber. It has become a #SayTheirNames funeral procession and call to action. As-of-yet-undisclosed political actions will be taken at this event because New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy has yet to say the names of those that have died or made any effort at all to decarcerate COVID-19.
